The Open Recap

Posted By on Mar 31, 2014

For those not completely obsessed and sitting on the edge of your seat for the last five Thursdays the workouts are here. Actually if you’re not, you may not even want to bother with this post  😉

14.1 see here

14.2

When I walked into the gym on Friday morning after the 14.2 announcement one of the guys yelled across, “so you like this one better Alyson?” haha.. “Yes, yes I do!” I yelled back. Pull-ups and overhead squats are two of my favorite movements, so even though I knew this one was going to hurt, it was at least going to be while doing things I really like! (It’s fair to say CrossFitters are masochists).

Truth be told, I was nervous for this one for a completely different reason. I knew this was one I could potentially do well on. I wanted it, both for myself, to make up for the prior week’s lameness, and for my team.

I thought about it. Strategized. Set a plan. Stuck with it. And I think it also went as well as it could have. Any faster and I think I would have hit a wall too soon, and any slower wasn’t an option.

It was fun. Really fun. .. see masochists, haha

If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen this video this morning..

With this caption:

Totally had a ‘woah’ moment this morning! Part of today’s WOD called for burpee muscle ups, which I’d never done before. In the middle I realized a year ago I couldn’t hold myself up on the rings.. let alone do ring dips, muscle ups or burpee muscle ups! It’s amazing the difference a year can make!

Saying it was a ‘whoa’ (had to be spell corrected on that one!) moment was the best way to describe it. I guess sometimes things like that just sneak up on you! It also made me realize it’s been almost a year since I decided to try to compete in another Fitness competition but train using CrossFit. That competition was 6 months ago. So, where am I now? ..

It will never cease to amaze me.

The most important lessons I learn day in and day out when I walk into the gym have nothing to do with getting stronger or faster. They have everything to do with being the best person I can be in all areas of my life.

Here are 9 things I’m learning from CrossFit (that I’m working on applying across the rest of my life):

1) There are lessons to be learned everyday. – They’re not always obvious. Sometimes you have to look really hard for them. Sometimes they may as well smack you in the face.

Nothing ever goes away

2) Leave no regret. Leave no doubt. – What if’s? Coulda? Shoulda? Oh those are the worst. What would happen if you never allowed that feeling to creep up? What if you never held back from pushing that much harder, or putting yourself out there when you might get hurt?

14.1

Um yeah. Me and double unders.. I can do them OK fresh (but when is that ever of any use in CrossFit?!), but add anything and it’s as if I forget how to use my arms and legs. And yesterday my legs did just not want to jump at the end! I don’t think I went out too fast, but instead just hit a wall about 2 minutes too early. I’m not upset at myself for holding back, I definitely redlined, unfortunately it was wayyyy before I should.

On a positive note, even if my conditioning and cardio still.. well suck.. they are much better than they were last year at this time. So although I’m not happy with my score from the perspective of wanting to contribute to the team, I know if I put in the work (and I will!), it will keep getting better. On the positive side, the snatches were fun and beyond the expected fatigue my body felt really good (yay yoga)!

The only other movement I’m not particularly pumped about is wall balls.. but just gotta get it done! Pumped for next week!

Yoga for CrossFit and CrossFit for Yoga!

After 14.1 I spent a good amount of time stretching out, especially hamstrings, hips and shoulders. I figured since I was nice and warm (and a little frustrated), why not have a little fun..

Think what I love most about this video is the guys (my coach, a previous Games competitor, and another one of the top athletes at Central) joining in!

The more I explore the mutually beneficial connections and balance between CrossFit and yoga the more excited I get! Yes yoga is of course great for mobility and flexibility, but also add in..

During training and workouts I’m either super serious..

Or smiling..

There’s no in between (not shocking if you know me 😉 ).

There are good and bad workouts. Strengths and weaknesses. Things that go as planned, and things that are major surprises. I’m certainly learning how to respond to each in order to become a better athlete. If I don’t do well at a workout for physical reasons, I may be a bit disappointed in my performance for a moment, but then reflect on what happened, where my weakness was and how I can improve.

The 2014 Fittest Games

Wow.

This was certainly a weekend I’ll remember for a long time. I competed in my first individual CrossFit competition, The Fittest Games. Not an easy weekend to say the least, and even though I’ve competed quite a bit in my life (in other sports), I was incredibly surprised by the roller coaster of emotions the week leading up and weekend brought.

It went something like this..

CrossFit – Year 1

CrossFit – Year 1

Posted By on Dec 17, 2013

It’s my one year CrossFit anniversary. Feels like there’s so much I could say, it’s overwhelming and I don’t know where to start. Fortunately, CrossFit Central helped, so I’ll piggy back on this video that I think captures my feelings pretty damn well.

2013 Diesel Athlete: Alyson Boyd from CrossFit Central on Vimeo.

Full Story

I could NEVER have predicted what an impact CrossFit, the workouts, the community, would have on me. Never imagined. CrossFit makes me a better person, a stronger person mentally and physically, every day.  So thankful to get to do this. It’s just the beginning.
